The makers of the DOS app haven't existed for around 15 years, but as happens in some organisations, they are utterly dependant on it. If the physical PC dies, they're SOL. I've told them that if they have the original install disks of the application we could probably run it in a virtual machine, but those disks were misplaced a long time ago.

The physical PC does have a working network adaptor, so surely its just a case of running DISK2VHD, dumping the image over the network and firing the VHD up in Hyper-V? There are a lot of assumptions here. Will DISK2VHD even run on W98?

Will it see the network? Will Hyper-V recognise the W98 image? Has anyone else recently been tasked with virtualising a physical W98 box? Any pointers, or is it as simple as I'm assuming it will be (things rarely are!) • • • • •. Ddrescue is the one I've grown accustomed to, since that's the one that ships with RIP.

Both work great, though. The status output on ddrescue's really a favorite part for me, too. It's nice to actually know that the copy's going to take ~5 weeks. Instead of having to do the math myself after sending a USR1 to dd. (Actually, that copy would've choked on dd anyhow, since it won't handle a controller reset like ddrescue will). As an added handy note, instead of /dev/sd*, using the symlinks in /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-* put drive model & serial numbers into the log, and even make it possible to shift the whole copy to a different machine and resume from the log without any concerns of getting things out of order.
